Asilah Day Tour from Tangier

This white city is an open-air art gallery

Asilah, the first harbor of the Atlantic coast, was founded in the 8th century BC by the Phoenicians, who named the settlement Zili.

Asilah was a constant battle ground. In 1589, control passed from the Portuguese to the Spanish, who held the town for 80 years before Sultan Moulay Ismail stormed the defenses in 1691

The Spanish built a Harmonious New Town beside the Medina, from which a slowly evolving new harbor and beaches extend northwards along the coast.

ITINERARY

Your adventure begins just after I pick you up from Tangier. The trip between Tangier and Asilah will allow you to contemplate the different landscapes, Berber villages, the Atlantic coast, wild beaches and summer resorts.

After Lunch in a Local Fish restaurant, we’ll head to The Zelaka. It’s a quiet but pretty enough square with a couple of café-restaurants look on the walls of the old town. The 16th century Portuguese ramparts of Asilah are of attractively worn yellow stone.

Bab el Bhar, Bab el Homar and Bab el Kasbah. The latter leads from Place Zelaka directly into the old government quarter of the town, now dominated by the recently enlarged Great Mosque with its distinctive octagonal minaret and the magnificent “Centre Hassan II des rencontres Internationales. ” This new cultural centre is at its busiest during the August Festival, but at other times stages number of art exhibitions, concerts and sales of work among its tiled courtyards.
